Tumlungwahn, U-Thong: Keeping Local Stories Alive Through Tourism
Discover how a new generation in U-Thong, Thailand, is using community-based tourism to preserve local heritage, share traditions, and create opportunities for local people.
“Sometimes, we have to travel far enough to see our own home differently.”
Growing up in a place often means taking familiar things for granted. The food we have eaten since childhood, the crafts our grandparents made, and the stories we have heard countless times.
Yet sometimes, it takes travelling elsewhere to recognise the value of what has always been around us.
That is how Tumlungwahn, a small community tourism group in U-Thong, Suphan Buri, Thailand, began seeing its hometown differently.
Through community-based tourism, the group is bringing local history, food, crafts, and everyday traditions to life, while creating meaningful opportunities for the people who call U-Thong home.
Rediscovering the Value of Home
U-Thong is a historic district in Suphan Buri, known for its archaeological heritage connected to the Dvaravati period. For many local people, however, growing up surrounded by history does not always mean recognising its value.
After travelling to other places in Thailand and abroad, the people behind Tumlungwahn began looking at their hometown through different eyes.
The familiar food, craftsmanship, local wisdom, and stories they had grown up with suddenly felt more meaningful.
One question inspired them:
“If the things we grew up with are valuable, what can we do to make sure they don't disappear?”
Tourism became one way to answer that question.
Not by turning U-Thong into a mass tourism destination, but by inviting visitors to discover the community through the eyes of local people.
A New Generation Keeping Local Stories Alive
Meet Ping — Mr. Pattaranit Putpeerawit, Community Leader
Behind Tumlungwahn is a personal story that begins with family.
The initiative grew from the vision of Ping's father, who believed that local people could bring their knowledge, skills, and resources together to create something meaningful for their community.
Ping initially supported the project behind the scenes, using his interests in photography, storytelling, and social media to introduce U-Thong to a younger audience. But the more he spoke with older generations, the more he discovered stories and traditions that had often been overlooked simply because they were part of everyday life.
After his father passed away, the project became even more personal.
What began as a community initiative became a way to carry forward his father's vision and preserve the relationships, knowledge, and stories he had helped bring together.
Rather than creating something purely to attract visitors, Ping wants people to discover U-Thong as it truly is, with its own character, stories, and rhythm.
For him, tourism is not only about bringing people to U-Thong. It is about giving local stories a future.
Experience U-Thong Through Local People
At Tumlungwahn, visitors do more than visit attractions. They discover the stories behind local traditions through hands-on experiences led by community members.
At Wichian Foundry, visitors can learn about traditional metal casting and the craftsmanship connected to U-Thong's history.
Food experiences offer another window into local life, from making Khanom Chin (traditional Thai rice noodles) and local desserts to enjoying seasonal dishes prepared with local ingredients.
Visitors can also explore rice fields on a local motorbike, try traditional bamboo weaving, enjoy coffee under the trees, or create a personal keepsake through bead-making.
These may seem like simple activities, but each one carries a story.
By meeting local people, learning their skills, and understanding the traditions behind them, visitors experience a side of Thailand that goes beyond typical sightseeing.
The real experience is not just what visitors do, but the people they meet and the stories they take home.
More Than Tourism: Creating Impact for the Community
For Tumlungwahn, successful tourism is not simply about the number of visitors. It is about how tourism benefits the community and helps preserve what makes U-Thong special.
- Creating Additional Income
Tourism creates opportunities for local people to earn additional income by sharing their food, crafts, knowledge, and everyday skills alongside their existing livelihoods. Different community members can participate and benefit from the experiences they help create.
- Building Pride in Local Identity
When visitors show interest in local traditions, familiar things begin to feel special again. Tourism encourages community members to recognise the value of their heritage and take pride in sharing it with others.
- Keeping Local Knowledge Alive
Many stories are not found in museums. They live in people's memories, recipes, crafts, and everyday practices. Sharing these traditions through tourism helps keep local knowledge visible and encourages its preservation.
- Empowering the Next Generation
Tumlungwahn creates space for younger people to rediscover their hometown and find new ways to carry its traditions forward. The future does not have to look exactly like the past. What matters is that the stories continue.
This is what makes community-based tourism meaningful: local people are not simply part of the visitor experience. They are the people shaping it and benefiting from it.
