Ban Na Ton Chan: The Village That Inspired SiamRise Travel

How one rural community in Thailand shaped our vision of sustainable tourism

· Community Stories

When We First Arrived

Before SiamRise Travel became what it is today, we were searching for a different kind of tourism one that truly benefits local people. That journey brought us to Ban Na Ton Chan, a small village far from Thailand’s main tourist routes. We came as visitors. We left with a new understanding of what tourism could be.

A Community Built From Determination

Twenty-two years ago, Ban Na Ton Chan was facing a familiar challenge across rural Thailand:

  • Limited income
  • Young people leaving for cities
  • Families separated by economic necessity

A community leader, Aunty Sa-Ngerm, believed change could start from within the community. With contributions of only a few baht from local women, she formed a small cooperative to create jobs at home. So families could stay together. There was no tourism master plan. Only trust, cooperation, and hope.

Tourism Designed by the Community

After learning from rural tourism models abroad, villagers developed their own homestay program managed entirely by the community.

Tourism became a way to:

  • Preserve culture
  • Share local wisdom
  • Create fair income
  • Give every generation a role

Today, Ban Na Ton Chan includes:

  • Family-run homestays
  • Youth cultural guides
  • Local food and craft groups
  • Elders sharing living traditions

Tourism here strengthens community life instead of changing it.

The Moment That Shaped SiamRise Travel

When we visited, we realized something important:

Sustainable tourism is not created by companies.
It is created by communities.

Together with the village, we helped strengthen their storytelling and online presence by creating social media channels that allowed travelers who truly value culture and authenticity to discover them. Ban Na Ton Chan became more than a destination. It became a role model for how SiamRise Travel works with communities across Thailand today.

Protecting People Before Profit

As the village grew in popularity, external investors began showing interest. The community responded by creating a Community Constitution, ensuring tourism would always remain locally owned and fairly managed. This lesson continues to guide our work:

👉 Responsible travel must protect community identity first.

A Living Classroom for Educational Travel

For universities, researchers, and conscious travelers, Ban Na Ton Chan represents a real example of:

  • Community-led development
  • Sustainable livelihoods
  • Cultural preservation
  • Social impact through tourism

Students don’t only visit. They learn how tourism can reduce rural-urban inequality and empower local people.

Global Recognition, Local Heart

Today, Ban Na Ton Chan is internationally recognized, including receiving the PATA Grand Award for Cultural Heritage & Sustainability. Yet the greatest success is simple as families live together again, young generations return home and the community thrives on its own terms. Why This Story Matters to us, SiamRise Travel was founded on one belief:

Travel should create impact for people, place, and future generations.

Ban Na Ton Chan helped us understand that meaningful tourism begins with listening, learning, and walking alongside communities. and that philosophy continues in every journey we design today.
