Educational Travel in Thailand: Field Trip with Impact, A Social Enterprise Learning Journey with Srinakharinwirot University

Co-creating faculty-led learning journeys connecting universities with real social enterprise ecosystems in Thailand

· Educational Travel Thailand

Educational travel today goes far beyond traditional study tours. Universities increasingly seek experiential learning opportunities that allow students to engage directly with real-world challenges, communities, and innovators shaping sustainable futures. Through Field Trip with Impact, SiamRise Travel collaborates with universities and educational institutions to design academic travel programs aligned with curriculum objectives while delivering meaningful social engagement.

In partnership with the Faculty of Business Administration for Society, Srinakharinwirot University, SiamRise Travel organized a faculty-led educational travel program for students majoring in Social Enterprise.

The destination was Chiang Rai, a region widely recognized as a living laboratory of community development, sustainable tourism, innovation, and social entrepreneurship.

Rather than observing from classrooms, students learned directly from practitioners working across different scales of social enterprise from mountain communities and national enterprises to innovation spaces and faith-based social welfare initiatives.

Educational Travel as Experiential Learning

This educational travel program was co-designed with university lecturers to achieve specific learning outcomes:

  • Understanding real social enterprise ecosystems in Thailand
  • Connecting business theory with field practice
  • Experiencing community-based development models
  • Learning sustainable tourism and inclusive economic systems
  • Encouraging critical thinking through immersive engagement

Educational travel becomes transformative when students interact with real changemakers and witness impact in action.

1. Agro-Industry & Community Tourism

From Illicit Crops to Sustainable Livelihoods, Community-Based Tourism at Doi Pha Mee

The learning journey began in Doi Pha Mee, an Akha hill tribe community located in the mountains of Northern Thailand. Once associated with illicit crop cultivation, the village has successfully transitioned toward sustainable livelihoods through specialty coffee production and community-based tourism supported by the Doi Tung Development Project by Mae Fah Luang Foundation.

Students explored how community-led tourism can drive social and economic transformation through:

  • Local ownership and governance
  • Cultural identity preservation
  • Ethical income distribution
  • Environmental stewardship
  • Long-term sustainable development planning

The visit illustrated how tourism can function as a practical social enterprise model rooted in community empowerment.

Doi Kham: A National Social Enterprise Model

At Doi Kham Food Products, students examined one of Thailand’s pioneering social enterprises inspired by royal development philosophy. The study visit to Doi Kham Factory No. 2 in Mae Chan demonstrated how social enterprise can operate at national scale while maintaining strong social impact.

Key learning topics included:

  • Integrated supply chain management from farmers to consumers
  • Value-added agro-processing industries
  • Fair trade systems supporting rural producers
  • Business sustainability aligned with social mission

This session allowed students to understand how large-scale enterprises can balance commercial success with community well-being.

2. Learning & Innovation, Social Change Through Play

Educational travel also introduces students to unconventional social enterprise models.

At Rong Len – Playable Museum, students experienced a community enterprise that uses “play” as a tool for social innovation. The organization transforms learning into interactive maker-space experiences that empower children, families, and communities.

Students explored:

  • Play as a social development tool
  • Maker-space learning environments
  • Revival of traditional Thai toys and local wisdom
  • Creativity as a driver of community entrepreneurship

The experience challenged traditional perceptions of innovation by showing how social impact can emerge from creativity, culture, and human-centered design.

3. Leisure & Destination Development

Building Landmarks that Support Local Economies. Educational travel programs also examine how destinations themselves are strategically developed.

At Wat Rong Khun, internationally known as the White Temple, students analyzed how visionary cultural attractions generate tourism flows and economic opportunities for local communities. The learning continued at Singha Park Chiang Rai, where agriculture, hospitality, retail, and recreation are integrated into a holistic tourism ecosystem.

Discussion themes included:

  • Destination branding and visitor economy development
  • Public-private collaboration
  • Tourism infrastructure as an economic catalyst
  • Integrating local products into tourism supply chains

Students gained insight into how tourism destinations can serve as platforms for regional economic development.

Temple-led community healthcare and social welfare initiative at Wat Huay Pla Kang Chiang Rai Thailand

4. Temple-Led Community Well-Being

Faith as a Driver of Social Impact. One of the most distinctive learning experiences explored the intersection between spirituality and social enterprise.

At Wat Huay Pla Kang, students discovered how religious institutions can play a vital role in community development. Centered around the Wat Huay Pla Kang Social Welfare Hospital, the temple functions as a hub for community health and social welfare.

Through the power of faith and collective compassion, the initiative provides:

  • Free medical treatment for underprivileged populations
  • Social assistance for vulnerable groups
  • Emotional and spiritual support for local communities
  • Cultural and spiritual spaces fostering hope and resilience

This experience broadened students’ understanding of social enterprise, demonstrating that impact-driven models can emerge from cultural and spiritual leadership as much as from business innovation.
