Free Bangkok Walks: Hidden Charms of Samyan & Banthat Thong - Discovering the Essence of Life in the Shadows of Urban Growth

Internship Program for Sustainable Tourism Development – A Journey to Uncover the City’s Stories

Internships are more than just learning office skills—they offer real-world experiences and the opportunity to create meaningful social impact. The Free Bangkok Walks project provides a platform for interns to develop tourism experience design skills, from conducting research and selecting destinations to crafting immersive storytelling experiences that connect the past with the present.

One of the programs born from this initiative is “Hidden Charms of Samyan & Banthat Thong.” Designed to showcase the unique charm of life amidst urban transformation, this tour takes participants through Samyan and Banthat Thong—once home to traditional businesses and sacred shrines that served as community hubs. Today, as the city expands, the area has become a hub for universities, trendy restaurants, and vibrant lifestyle venues. Yet, a closer look reveals a seamless coexistence between history and modernity.

Cultural Roots: Thai-Chinese Heritage and Community Spirit

Samyan is one of Bangkok’s historic Thai-Chinese neighborhoods, with roots tracing back to the reign of King Rama V. The early Chinese settlers brought rich cultural heritage, traditions, and beliefs that continue to shape the area.

Temples such as The Goddess Tubtim Shrine and The Tiger God Shrine stand as spiritual anchors of the community. These sacred sites are more than just places of worship—they embody the deep connections between religion, faith, and everyday life.

Samyan: From Historic Community to an Educational & Innovation H

Urban expansion has dramatically transformed Samyan. Today, the area serves as an academic and innovation hub, home to Chulalongkorn University, which plays a key role in shaping Samyan into a center of learning and creativity.

\The economic development of the Chulalongkorn area, such as Samyan Mitrtown reflect this transformation, balancing the neighborhood’s heritage with the dynamic lifestyles of modern city dwellers. Designed with inclusivity and accessibility for all in mind, the space fosters interaction, relaxation, and cultural exchange among visitors from diverse backgrounds.

The Effort to Balance Development and Preservation

While economic growth brings inevitable change, preserving the area’s identity remains a priority. Landmarks like The Goddess Tubtim Shrine serve as testaments to the commitment to safeguarding cultural heritage amidst urban evolution.

Another example of this balance is Chulalongkorn University Centenary Park, a green space designed to combat urban flooding while offering a peaceful retreat and a model for sustainable urban development. Similarly, Banthat Thong—once a hub for auto parts dealers—has transformed into a vibrant street lined with trendy cafés and restaurants, making it one of Bangkok’s most iconic lifestyle destinations.
