    This homestay is with a traditional Thai Yai or Shan tribe community.

    The village is nestled in soy and rice fields that are 12 kilometres from the district of Khun Yuam and approximately 1.5 hours from Mae Hong Son.

    Here you can admire the traditional Thai Yai or Shan tribe architecture such as temples, specialty rustic wooden homes and tiered gables. You can watch nimble fingered artists weave and carve wood, bamboo and metal into exquisite patterns.

    Also, enjoy the healthy and delicious local food from a Thai Yai kitchen with your welcoming hosts.

  • 🍀SOCIAL IMPACT:

    This expedition is part of the Grace Shan Village community development fund. The goal is to ensure that every travelers' spending goes to support local people and reducing rural-urban migration.

    🍀ITINERARY:

    • DAY1: Mae Hong Son- Shan Tribe Village (-/L/D)

    Depart from your hotel in Mae Hong Son and drive to the Khun Yuam district. Travel time is approximately 1.5-hours with a short break at a viewpoint to admire the mountainous scenery.
    Upon arrival at the village meet the local guide who will accompany you and expose you to the local Shan or Tai-Yai tradition and culture.
    You will begin by visiting the Shan temple where you will learn about its importance to local tradition and ceremony.
    Afterwards you will meet your host family and then enjoy a traditional Shan lunch.
    In the afternoon you will continue your village walking tour. On this you will experience the traditional Shan art and craft, which includes paper and metal sheet carving. Next you will visit a traditional Shan costume making group.
    In the late afternoon you will return to your homestay to have leisure time or if you prefer you can help your hosts cook dinner.
    Dinner will be served at your homestay.

    Overnight: Simple and comfortable homestay, bedding and mosquito net are provided.

    • DAY2: Experience Local Culture of Shan (B/L/D)

    Wake up to an early start (around 5:00AM) so you can experience the village morning market. Buy some local food which you can then offer to the monks.
    Return to your homestay for breakfast. Today you will observe a local food-processing group and you will see how they make local sweets and snacks.
    Afterwards, visit the rice-paddy fields and a group of organic producers.
    Lunch will be served at your homestay.
    After lunch, enjoy, learn and observe how a Shan artisan makes traditional Shan hats (goob tai).
    You are then welcome to join your host family to prepare dinner or take some leisure time for yourself.
    Dinner will be at your homestay.

    Overnight: Simple and comfortable homestay, bedding and mosquito net are provided.

    • DAY3: Grace Shan Village – Mae Hong Son (B/L/-)

    Enjoy breakfast at your homestay. This morning there will be a half-day volunteer activity working on a farm with your host family*.
    Your lunch will be packed or served at your homestay.
    In the afternoon you will gather your belongings and say goodbye to your host family. Travel back to your hotel in Mae Hong Son or Pai.

     

    Note:

    - there are many different volunteer activities that available throughout the year such as building or maintaining dams, making a fire break and/or maintain the watershed area. Please discuss which activity you would like to do with your tour guide and the local community.​
    - All mentioned activities are subject to change depending on the weather, availability and safety reasons. This can occur without notice prior to the date.
