Best Practice | Social Enterprise Hotel in Chanthaburi, Thailand

Social Enterprise towards the local community, Chantaburi

Chantabun Waterfront Community is an old center for trading goods between the Thai, Chinese and Vietnamese around 100 years ago. Nowadays, the Chantabun Waterfront community is still attractive to people for its old-style architecture like the buildings from the past, and with its rich culture and traditions of the people in the community.

The Chantabun Waterfront Community is supported by Social Enterprise in the area, which is Baan Luang Rajamaitri and Arsom Silp Institute Of The Arts.

Baan Luang Rajamaitri

Baan Luang Rajamaitri Historical Inn is one of the interesting attractions and accommodations in the Chantabun Waterfront Community. There is a history behind Baan Luang Rajamaitri Historical Inn. The heir of the owner, Luang Rajamaitri, allowed Arsom Silp, Institute Of The Arts, to collaborate with an association of the Chantabun Waterfront Community to renovate the old Luang Rajamaitri House to be a historical inn, which was designed by Arsom Silp, as an accommodation for tourists who visit Chantabun Waterfront Community.

This accommodation is the product of the local people, the owner of the Luang Rajamaitri house and Arsom Silp Institute Of The Arts. To build a company as a social enterprise to support and conserve local lives with the slogan 'Conservation with love,' because conservation isn't just to take care of the building (the 150 years old house) but it means to take care of lives. Only the thought of it isn't enough, we have to put love into it.

This Historic Inn has about 300 shareholders, which are locals from the community, every staff at the accommodation are locals from the community as well. Building the love of their own communities is one of the ways to sustain the Chantabun Waterfront Community.

The Social Enterprise of the Chantabun Waterfront Community would not happen without Arsom Silp Institute Of The Arts

Arsom Silp Institute Of The Arts, a non-profit organization (NGO) which is a well-known architect company that has distinctive points of design along the wisdom and eco-friendly. Also, Arsom Silp Institute Of The Arts is an institute teaching Architecture and Education.

Arsom Silp Institute Of The Arts, who was involved in the development since 2009, helps the Chantabun Waterfront Community be more sustainable by giving knowledge and using local participants through the project ‘Social Enterprise for Architectural Conservation and Revitalization Historic District’ to build the model of Chantabun through the Chantabun Ruk dee Company, which is the idea of Social Enterprise.

This is just an example of how social enterprise could work to affect the local community to be sustainable. Using the participation of local people and building the understanding to the locals about sustainable developing.
